Birthing The Moon
Birthing The Moon
Despite historical researches and astrology the moon is believed or rather perceived by many to have just occured, I mean with no due formalities. It is presumed as the Earth's satellite and so little is drawn into knowing how the earth got to need a satellite, even more little knowledge to how it got to have one.
In the holy books, the creator; God is said to have created Earth and afterwards crafted the moon to give light to earth by night. He called it the lesser light, so the religious believe God created the moon.
Up until about the middle of the 20th century, it was believed by large number of Earth's research scientists and astrophysicists that the Moon was torn off from the earth much after the latter had acquired its solid crust, may be inclined to a huge asteroidal impact. The Pacific ocean was as the scar left behind when the Moon's mass was detached and thrown off.
This kind of presumption was then utilized to provide some explanation for the fitting boundaries and outlines of the continental blocks. Though not permitted by the radiometric ages of the lunar 'Highland' rocks which were even older than the oldest rocks dated on the Earth's crust.
Did the Moon get detached from the earth after the earth acquired its solid crust? Is it not possible that the Moon represents another planetary mass that condensed and solidified from the parent nebula which also gave rise to the Earth?
Could it have been also that; The Earth's nebula, while spinning rapidly around it's axis and also revolving around the sun, became unstable at one stage and broke up into two or several nebula masses, coalescing and accreting formed the Moon nebula and ultimately gave rise to the Earth--Moon system!.
The separation of Moon's nebula could have also been bought about by an asteroidal impact! Newson and Taylor (1987) proposed that during the final stages of accretion of the terrestrial planets a body some what larger than Mars collided with the earth and spun out a disc of material from which the moon was formed.
At this a conclusion to the research and question on how the Moon is formed is whether the separation of the Moon's nebula required a catastrophic impact or the Moon as an independent planetary body was captured by the Earth's gravity or the lunar nebula was spun off from the Earth's nebula mass; it is verified only by more information on compositions of lunar rocks and minerals as limited available data on average density of the moon, its composition and internal structure does lend support to the 'break--away' mechanism.
